Add GetFoxChat to your Jekyll site

The line to add

Yours has your own site ID in place of YOUR_SITE_ID.

On Jekyll, this is what goes in _layouts/default.html:

Add GetFoxChat to Jekyll, step by step

1. In GetFoxChat, open the install step for your site and copy your snippet. It already has your site ID in it. No account yet? Create one free.
2. Open _layouts/default.html, the base layout other layouts inherit from. source
3. If your site uses a gem theme and has no _layouts folder, find the theme files with bundle info --path followed by the theme name (for example minima). source
4. Copy the theme's default.html into your own _layouts folder with the same name; your copy overrides the theme file. source
5. Paste the GetFoxChat line just before </body> and replace YOUR_SITE_ID with your site ID. You can also put the line in _includes/getfoxchat.html and add {% include getfoxchat.html %} there. source
6. Rebuild the site and deploy it.
7. Back in GetFoxChat, press Check my site. The chat switches on once GetFoxChat finds the snippet on your live pages.

Jekyll gotchas

• With gem-based themes the _layouts and _includes folders are hidden inside the theme gem, so they are missing from your site folder until you copy a file over. source
• Layouts live in the _layouts folder; a file placed elsewhere is not used as a layout. source

Removing it later

Delete the GetFoxChat line (or the include) from your layout. If you copied default.html only for this, delete your copy so the theme's file is used again. Then rebuild and redeploy.
