Add GetFoxChat to your Hugo site

The line to add

Yours has your own site ID in place of YOUR_SITE_ID.

On Hugo, this is what goes in layouts/_partials/getfoxchat.html:

Add GetFoxChat to Hugo, step by step

1. In GetFoxChat, open the install step for your site and copy your snippet. It already has your site ID in it. No account yet? Create one free.
2. Create a partial file, layouts/_partials/getfoxchat.html, containing only the GetFoxChat line with your site ID. source
3. Open layouts/baseof.html, the base template that holds the html, head and body elements for your pages. source
4. Just before </body>, add {{ partial "getfoxchat.html" . }}. source
5. If baseof.html only exists inside your theme, copy it into your project's layouts folder first and edit the copy. source
6. Run the hugo build and deploy the public folder. source
7. Back in GetFoxChat, press Check my site. The chat switches on once GetFoxChat finds the snippet on your live pages.

Hugo gotchas

• Hugo looks in your project before the theme, so a copy in your own layouts folder wins over the theme file and survives theme updates. source
• Hugo does not clear the public folder before a build; old files stay unless you clean it. source
• The live site only changes after you run a new build and deploy it. source

Removing it later

Remove the partial call from baseof.html and delete layouts/_partials/getfoxchat.html, then rebuild and redeploy.

Folder names follow the current Hugo docs (layouts/baseof.html, layouts/_partials). If your theme keeps its base template in a different folder, edit the baseof.html your theme actually uses.
