Add GetFoxChat to your Joomla site

The line to add

Yours has your own site ID in place of YOUR_SITE_ID.

On Joomla, this is what goes in media/templates/site/cassiopeia/js/user.js:

Add GetFoxChat to Joomla, step by step

1. In GetFoxChat, open the install step for your site and copy your snippet. It already has your site ID in it. No account yet? Create one free.
2. In the Joomla Administrator, go to System, then Site Templates, then Cassiopeia Details and Files, which opens the Template: Customise (Cassiopeia) form. source
3. In the media files group, select the js folder, then the New button. source
4. In the New File dialog, keep the js folder selected, enter user as the File Name, choose .js as the File Type, and select Create. If user.js already exists, open it instead. source
5. Paste the GetFoxChat loader lines (shown on this page) into user.js, with your own site ID in place of the placeholder. source
6. Click Save, then reload your site and check that the chat bubble shows. source
7. Back in GetFoxChat, press Check my site. The chat switches on once GetFoxChat finds the snippet on your live pages.

Joomla gotchas

• user.js holds JavaScript, not HTML, so the plain script tag will not work there; use the short loader that creates the tag. source
• Do not edit the template's own files such as index.php; the Joomla guide says you may add user.css and user.js but should not change the template files. source
• These steps are for Cassiopeia. A third-party template may not load user.js, so check with its maker or use a child template. source

Removing it later

Go back to System, Site Templates, Cassiopeia Details and Files, open js, user.js, delete the GetFoxChat loader lines (or the whole file if you added nothing else), and save.

Applies to Joomla 4 and 5 with the built-in Cassiopeia template; source checked on the 5.4-dev branch. The guide's click-by-click steps describe creating user.css; the same New File flow in the js folder creates user.js. That Cassiopeia loads user.js on every page is confirmed from Joomla's own source on GitHub (joomla.asset.json declares template.user as user.js, index.php calls useScript for it). This file holds JavaScript, not HTML, so it gets a short loader that adds the same script tag with your site ID once the page has loaded.
